Ontario’s finance minister Rod Phillips resigned from his position in cabinet on Thursday, hours after returning home from a Caribbean vacation that defied pandemic guidelines.

“Travelling over the holidays was the wrong decision, and I once again offer my unreserved apology,” Phillips said in a statement released shortly after the premier said he had accepted Phillips’ resignation.

Premier Doug Ford had faced pressure to remove Phillips from caucus due to the trip, which opposition members have criticized.

Travis Dhanraj reports on his resignation, the criticism from opposition and what’s next for the embattled politician.
